Frank's Original RedHot Cayenne Pepper Sauce

Rating: ★★★★

Despite its name, it isn't very hot at all but it is a favorite of mine. Mainly because it goes on anything. Many hot sauces, like Ed's Red (I'll be reviewing next) have more specific uses. Frank's RedHot is much more versatile. (Note the nearly empty bottle in the photo... I use it so much, I didn't even get to photography it before I used so much!)

It is a thicker sauce. Like many, vinegar and peppers (specifically cayenne), and a touch of garlic. You can put a ton of it on anything you want and it will not over heat it. However, it is wise to be careful with it as the vinegar can become too much.

I use it on all things because it doesn't impact flavor other than the basic vinegar and saltiness of the sauce. If you like sour things, I think you'll like it. One of its keen functions is to make buffalo wings. In fact, that is probably the best comparison to what flavor you'll get from it.

A great recipe for buffalo wing sauce:

  • 1:3 ratio of melted butter to Frank's Redhot
  • 2 cloves garlic, pressed (or garlic powder in a pinch)
  • A little ground pepper
  • A sprinkle of paprika

It is a very classic buffalo wing sauce but I think you'l like it. For a healthier spin on things, replace the butter with olive oil. It is surprisingly good.

Flavor: 2, There are a lot of hot sauces out there that are very similar but their is a certain flair to Frank's ReHot. There is a touch of bitterness... just a very minor touch and it really finishes it off. One might not even notice it unless you taste it along.

Versatility: 5, Just about anytime I want to put some hot sauce on something and I'm not sure which one, this is likely the default.

Uniqueness: 2, This is a little hard to put a finger on. As with flavor, there are many that are very similar so it isn't terribly unique. Yet, like Tabasco, it was introduced nearly a century ago, 1920, and thus, I would argue Frank's RedHot is unique because it is an original. Others cam later.

I have a long list of uses for this hot sauce but there are my favorites.
